Tahquamenon Falls State Park

Friday we headed 90 minutes north back into the upper peninsula to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Tahquamenon is a 50,000 square foot park stretching over 13 miles and features 2 waterfalls. The upper falls are over 200 feet wide and the lower falls features several smaller falls 4 miles downstream. The amber hue of the falls is due to tannins from surrounding swamps. Dogs are permitted in all areas of this state park, so Charlie joined us on today’s trip.

We started at the lower falls loop. At the break to the River walk to the upper falls, Dad, Brandon and the Dog decided to do the 4 mile hike up and split off. Mom, middle and youngest stayed on the loop and finished the lower falls, then drove up to upper falls to meet up. The lower falls loop was 1.6 miles and the upper falls loop was 1.5 so even the non-hikers today got in some good steps.

After dinner we headed into Mackinaw City for one last ice cream stop and walked the cute shops which reminded us of Bethany Beach in Delaware. A strip of candy shops, ice cream shops, restaurants, T-shirt shops up and down each side of the street with parking in the middle. It was almost like being home, but we were missing Kohr Brothers Ice Cream!

One last sunset walk at 10pm provided the best lake views of the week. We will miss Lake Huron. Tomorrow we pack up and head south west towards Lake Michigan!
