Thursday we headed north again, back to the Upper Peninsula to Saulte Ste. Marie to spend a rainy day in Michigan visiting the Soo Locks. Dating back to the 1800s and now run by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Soo Locks connect Lakes Superior and Huron. Using a series of gates and chambers, the locks operate by raising and lowering boats between the levels of Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes along the St. Mary River. Water and boats are moved solely by the force of gravity.
We watch 2 enormous freighters come through the locks. 1,000 feet long and over 100 feet wide. It takes about 20-30 minutes to raise or lower the water to move them through. We also saw some tour boats clear the locks as well but decided not to take a tour. It was a very interesting day watching this feat of engineering at work.

We walked the small shops in town to find the perfect sticker for the camper door and then headed to find lunch. Joe came through with a food truck/street kitchen called Motown Nate’s and we stopped for some delicious BBQ and ate in a TeePee!

The rain broke long enough for another perfect evening walk with the puppy. We are loving the sweatshirt weather we are finding in Michigan! Even in the rain, Michigan can be perfect. Day five of an amazing trip….we might never leave 🙃
