Tuesday was our visit to Joshua Tree. It was a balmy 106 degrees at noon when we went out and it’s cooled off to 102 degrees now at 9pm PST as I write this. It’s hot… and we have learned we might not be desert people. Warnings were all over the park about the excessive heat. So we kept to the car most of the day and brought puppy with us. The camper only cooled to about 87 degrees with 2 ACs running.
Even from the car, the park was beautiful in its own extreme way. The meeting of the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert surrounded by mountains and filled with piled rocks which are actually granite. Palm filled oases meet you at the north entrance. It was amazing to see how some vegetation can survive in such extreme temperatures. We saw cactus gardens, yucca, Joshua Trees (of course) and a single live oak tree which no one knows how it survives in this climate. We also saw lots of rocks including Skull Rock and Split Rock. One of our lasts stops was Keys View which was an amazing view of the Coachella Vally and the San Andreas Fault. On the way back to our camper we drove to a sculpture that one of the rangers told us about. The art piece is called Transmission and stands 28 feet tall.
We have decided to head to San Diego early and leave the desert tomorrow morning. The weather on the coast is about 25 degrees cooler!
