Family History and Traditions

Saturday was a history and family day. We started with a private tour of Hugenot Street. Pam and her mom’s ancestors were the some of first settlers of New Patlz, NY back in the 1600’s, escaping religious persecution in France. They settled and 12 families signed a land deed with Native Americans to build houses on the land now know as Hugenot Street. It was a very cool tour and our tour guide Eddie was infectious with his knowledge and excitement of the local history. Pam’s dad, a long time history buff, made a new friend for sure! We then showed the kids around New Paltz a bit (a small village town so it didn’t take long), drove by both Pam’s parents childhood homes and then headed to Kingston. There is a hotdog shop in Kingston that Pam’s parents and grandparents frequented. When Pam was a child, she went there anytime she was up for a visit. It became a tradition. As in-laws joined the family, they didn’t exactly understand the excitement…. but Dallas Hot Wieners is a must stop on any trip to or through the Hudson Valley. Get the Dallas dog with everything. You won’t be disappointed. We stopped and visited grave sites for our kids 4 great-grandparents on Pam’s side and planted some spring flowers. We ended the day visiting with 2 of Pam’s uncles and cousins. Always great to see extended family while on the road. Heavy rain came in all evening and overnight into Sunday. Sunday morning we headed to church at St. Joseph’s in New Paltz where Pam’s grandparents were lifelong members and her parents were married over 47 years ago. We broke camp at noon and headed back for Pennsylvania. Quick but memorable trip!
