Day 9 – PEI National Park

We spent Sunday driving through PEI National Park. It was our first visit to another countries National Park. PEI NP runs along the seashore in the northern part of PEI, very close to where we are staying. It is 5,440 acres of land made up of beaches, coastline, cliffs, dunes and forest. It stretches almost 25 miles. We stopped at some of the beaches and explored some of the cliffs. Hurricane Fiona in 2022 left a wake of destruction across PEI. Thousands of trees fell, beaches washed out and there was significant erosion of the park’s shoreline and dunes. We definitely saw this as we drove around. We also stopped at Dalvay-By-The-Sea a national historic site which is a Victorian estate from the late 1800s that is a hotel now. Pam’s parents stayed there on a trip to PEI 25 years ago.

It has been so interesting to drive around PEI the last 2 days. You can tell that Canada has been committed to maintaining the agriculture, farming and fishing industries. There are beach/touristy areas full of restaurants and shops, but then you drive through a 20 mile stretch of farms, homes, and areas surrounded by water with oyster and mussle farms. Another stretch May find you driving past windmills and giant solar fields. It looks like a combination of Jersey Shore meets Lancaster County.

For lunch we stopped at a locals recommendation Blue Mussel Cafe in North Rustico Harbor. Delicious fish and of course, another round of PEI Mussels. Our dessert stop for tonight was at Beaver Tails. A Canadian favorite that we discovered back in 2019 when we visited Toronto and Niagra Falls.
