We started our travel day at 4:30am and headed to Clingmans Dome for sunrise. It is the highest point in the park, actually the 3rd highest point east of the Mississippi on mainland and the highest point on the Appalachian Trail. It was about a 50 minute drive and then a 1/2 mile strenuous uphill hike and we were hustling to get there since we were way past first light and cutting it close to sunrise. What we didn’t expect at those elevations were morning temps 30 degrees colder, wind and fog. While it was an adventure, not much of a view for sunrise considering we have seen sunrises at Grand Canyon and Acadia to name a couple.
We headed back to camp to clean up and start our drive. Joe noticed an issue with our slide on the camper when leaving Virginia and it seems to be continuing. The slide would not go in and took about an hour and a call to a local RV repair shop to fix it. It is fixed, fingers crossed it’s permanent.
We traveled from Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to Fayetville, West Virgina for our last stop and had fireside skillet pizza for dinner and dump cake for dessert. It was a beautiful quiet night at our new site. Day 9 we explore New River Gorge NP and then head home.
