Saturday started with a 6am wake-up call to get to Wind Cave. Everyone was tired after our late night at Rushmore. So we started with the kids arguing about who does or does not snore in their bunks. Never a dull moment. Joe had read that Wind Cave tours sell out very early in the day, so we wanted to get there early since we had to drive to another site today. I’m not a fan of caves. I don’t like not being able to see the sky and the thought of being stories and stories underground freaks me out. But I took one for the team and went with everyone. Joe said it was a very tame tour, only 90 minutes and the cave has stairs and pathways so no crawling on floors or through small spaces. I think my boys were disappointed… I was just fine with it.
It was a very cool tour though and our tour guide Don was great. The cave is the first National Park in the country that is a preservation of a cave. The formations are very different from many caves and are boxwork rather than stalactites and stalagmites.
On the way back from Wind Cave, we passed Crazy Horse (drive by… no stop) and also stopped to grab pie at another stop in our Road Food book, Purple Pie Place. The pie was AMAZING!
Our plan was to drive to Devils Tower, stay at a campground there and then visit tomorrow. When we rolled into town, the campsite Joe book said they didn’t have his reservation, but it was ok b/c the place was not nice at all and electric only. We had no water on board and even if we did, with 7 people, we need sewer, at least on site. So we called around and found an open spot. It was 45 minutes away and the kids were tired. So we stopped at Devils Tower for a quick visit today and knocked it off our list.
By the time we set up the camper and started dinner we were having some kiddo meltdowns. I was grumpy. We’ve been nonstop for 7 days. The site we booked only has about 10-15 campers here and is literally a gravel parking lot in the back of a neighborhood. But it has full hookup so it will work for tonight. We had some issues with our water (which made me grumpier as I was trying to wash dishes) and the owner was gone for the day, so Joe and my dad just ran a hose to another site. Problem solved. Early bed tonight (even the adults) and we are going to let everyone sleep in and chill out tomorrow. The only thing we have is a drive to Little Big Horn and we are camping there for the night. Should be an easy day. We‘ve learned a lot in 7 days and the biggest thing so far… if needed, reassess and adjust plans.
