Come Along On Our Camper Adventures!

Day 6 – Smaller than I thought…

More on that later. Day 6 stared and we were planning on hiking at Badlands, but the weather was rainy and Joe decided yesterday was such an amazing day, why not relax for the morning. So he caught up on emails and I did some laundry since we had some time.

Around lunch we rolled out of town and stopped at Minuteman Missile National Historic Site and learned about the missile silos built in the region during the Cold War.

From there we drove to our next site, Mount Rushmore KOA. This place is a huge resort with over 600 sites plus cabin rentals. It’s like a miniature town here. There is literally a rodeo arena across from our site. I was never into camping before, but this does not feel like camping with this many people around. The good thing though was we were 15 minutes from Mount Rushmore, our big stop of the day.

We were so excited rolling up to Rushmore. Every curve in the road has us thinking we would see the faces. The landscape headed up to the park was beautiful and the black hills were a vast change from the flat plans and blowing grass we has just left 2 hours ago. When we pulled into the park, Joe and I had the same exact reaction – we thought it would be bigger 😂

But it was amazing to see and a huge bucket list stop scratched off our list. We went late on purpose to see the lighting ceremony at the end of the day. That was really cool. A great video shows about the history of the park and how it came to be. Then they light up the mountain after sunset. We were able to take pictures, the kids went shopping and we had ice cream.

The kids were a moody today. Lots of bickering and attitude… but the day ended great and we have an early start tomorrow so hopefully everyone rests up and are ready to go.
