Day 15 – Acadia National Park

Today we started exploring Acadia. This is our 27th National Park. We are almost halfway through the 63 NPs as of 2023!

After a quick stop at the visitors center we headed to Park Loop Road. We stopped at Sand Beach, Thunder Hole (during low tide), Otter Point (where we saw a wedding taking place), and lots of pull-offs to take in the beautiful views. We stopped at Jordan Pond House for their famous popovers just in time for Afternoon Tea. Yummy! Then we headed back to Thunder Hole to check it out during high tide. We had such a busy day and we still have so much to do before we leave on Tuesday!

Sand Beach was sooooo cold! The water temp only gets to about 55 degrees in August so it was chilly! The boys opted out and wouldn’t even get their feet wet. We waded with our daughter and couldn’t drag her our. Our numb feet were done and she wanted to go in further. She was definitely living her best life in the water as always!

Thunder Hole at low tide. This is a carved out inlet along the rocky shoreline. When waves are forced into the narrow channel, the air escapes and can sound like thunder. We didn’t hear very loud noises, but we did see some cool waves crashing into the rocks.

Otter Point where we saw some great views and a wedding too!

Tons of pull offs we jumped out at or hiked to see the views.

Tea Time at Jordan Pond House. Delicious tea and lemonade and the best popovers we’ve ever had (first time for the kids). We also had some visits from seagulls… and they were so pretty and clean. Definitely not the dirty birds we are used to seeing at the jersey shore

Last stop was to head back to Thunder Hole at high tide. The high water levels were cool, but we though the sounds and sights were better at low tide. It is possible we just had a calm day. They say that sometimes, the waves at high tide can be 40 feet in the air.
