Wednesday we headed out to explore Portland. We started at The Holy Donut and had vegan donuts for the first time. An interesting experience for all of us and they had some unique flavors! Apparently we like donuts as much as we like ice cream.
Next we headed to Portland Head Light House, Portland’s most famous iconic light house. We viewed the lighthouse from the cliffs and toured the small museum.
Last stop for us was a lobstering trip we booked with Lucky Catch. We walked around the waterfront area for a little bit before our trip. The restaurant scene was impressive and we would definitely like to head back someday. Our lobstering trip was fun! The boat was so tiny and only 13 people plus the 3 crew. We learned about pulling and setting traps and filling bags with bait (fish heads and dead fish – yuck!). They also showed us how they measure, tell males vrs females and when they have to throw the females with eggs back, the sizing they can keep vrs throw back, and banding the claws. The traps we pulled were either empty or had lobsters that were too small to keep, but we still had a great time. The bay has been having trouble with the seals stealing the bait out of traps. Some of the traps we pulled were bent and beat up from the seals pulling and yanking so hard to get to the bait. If the traps had crabs in them, they were pulled and tossed back. We had a seagull land on the boat and they threw a crab back and he swooped down and grabbed the crap right up. The whole boat cheered for his win! We purchased some lobsters that were caught on earlier trips for $10 each! Can’t beat that price and fresh from the bay. We had an early dinner at a local spot on the pier that cooks your fresh catch for you. Yum!
Tomorrow we head to Massachusetts to stay outside of Boston for the final stop of our trip. We are meeting up with Joe’s parents who came up with their camper yesterday and are staying at the same campground as we are.
