We adopted Charlie from a local rescue in October 2020 and immediately fell in love. She is such a special part of our family now and we all love her so much. It never occurred to us that we wouldn’t take her on this trip. She loves being outside and walks 5-8 miles every day plus she has been hiking on our local trails with us. National Parks say they are “pet friendly”. They really aren’t. We researched a lot about taking her and more often than not, pets are only permitted in the parking lot areas or on selected trails. And crating her all day in the camper while we are out exploring, was not an option. Some of the campsites prohibit it. Plus she is still not a year old and gets fussy in her crate. There is a good chance we would crate her in the camper and she would whine and bark all day. Not ideal for those parked next to us and to be honest, not fair to Charlie. We looked into Dog Daycares along our route and they are not readily available and in some of the more remote areas, we would be driving over and hour just to drop her off or pick her up. plus up until about a month ago, Charlie was getting car sick and puking in the car. Not something I was looking forward to doing for over 6k miles this summer 🤮 So we made the tough decision to leave her here with family while we are gone. Not easy at all and I was super stressed making sure we had all weeks covered. We are going to miss her so much, but I know she will have fun on her own summer adventure. I just hope she doesn’t think we left her for good 😢❤️🐾
