We drove into the city again today Sunday headed into a holiday week so we took advantage of less traffic and free on street parking. We went in early to try and get day of tickets to the top of the Washington Monument. No such luck. We grabbed a quick breakfast at Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken… b/c what’s better than donuts and fried chicken at 9am!
The kids were troopers today. We walked over 7 miles and it was cloudy and windy. 20 mph winds put it in the low 40s most of the day. We spent some time in the Smithsonian Museum of American History today to warm up. The teenager was excited to see there was a college engineer exhibition going on so he got to see a bunch of projects presented. We checked out a lot of other exhibits too.
After the museum we definitely ended up in the right place at the right time. We were heading towards the White House and there were some pretty big crowds. Joe asked one of the national park rangers where we should go to get the closest view of the White House and he gave us tickets to the spring garden tours that were going on today! We had to spend an hour in line to clear security but we got up close to the house and saw the rose garden and south lawn. We were only about 5 feet from the steps and maybe 15 feet from the Oval Office. It was a very cool experience for all.
