Come Along On Our Camper Adventures!

Partial Rest Day/Carlsbad Bat Flight

We had a partial rest day today. Four of us started with a 3.25 mile hike along River Walk in downtown Carlsbad. The teenager didn’t want to get out of bed for that. It was a beautiful path along the river, but as we have found in the desert, it gets hot fast. We were back at the camper by lunch. The kiddos had a rest afternoon full of electronics and we had to take Charlie to the vet. She started what we thought was an eye infection yesterday so Pam called a couple local vets and one squeezed us in this afternoon. We were able to get eye drops for her to hopefully kick it out in the next week before we get home. I always worry that one of the kids will get sick on the road… nope it was the dog!

After a relaxing afternoon we headed to Carlsbad Caverns to see the bat flight at dusk. Once the sun goes down millions of bats exit the cave to get water and food before dawn. It was so cool to see! We don’t have any pictures! They make you turn off your phones and there is no photography permitted because lights/flashes can injure the bats. Caroline even spotted an owl sitting on the rocks and we saw it swoop in 3 or 4 times getting dinner for him/herself. If you google Carlsbad Bat Flight, there are some cool videos and images of it… but being there was so much cooler! Tomorrow we head back to the caves early to explore before a long drive through part of Texas and a quick stopover.
