Sunday was rainy everywhere we went. We woke up to a fridge on the fritz. Joe emptied and defrosted it with a hair dryer and it seemed to do the trick. Fingers crossed it worked. We were lucky in that we only lost milk, lunch meat and some mayo based dressings. The freezer, which Pam had packed with prepped food, seemed to be ok.
We headed on a long drive to Vermont to visit a mid-sized family run maple syrup farm, Baird Farm. What a fun experience! The farm has expanded their agritourism in recent years, so we enjoyed a free tour with 3 other families. We had an outdoor tour of their farm and saw how they tap trees and collect the sap, then transport it underground to their sugar house. Luckily, we had a break in the rain for an hour. In the sugar house we saw all the machines they use to separate water, boil down and barrel the syrup. We then had a taste test of the different flavors and infusions. Yum! The 560 acre farm has over 14,000 maple trees and over 115 miles of tubing run the trees collecting sap each season. It’s off season so nothing was operating, but the tour guide was very entertaining and we learned a lot about syrup.
We spent the late afternoon at Billings Farm and Museum in Woodstock, VT. We toured their museum to see the history of farming in Vermont and got to tour their barns and see their prize winning Jersey cows. Milk from their cows is used to make cheese and ice cream. It’s national ice cream day, so of course we had to get some ice cream.
A long day has us stopping for an early dinner and we found a local BBQ shop – Wicked Awesome BBQ in White River Junction. Five Thumbs Up!
